When soil forces an engineered system
Soil that's too dense, too shallow over bedrock or a water table, or otherwise too slow to absorb wastewater at a safe rate fails a conventional design. That's the practical meaning of a "very limited" SSURGO rating - it's the soil condition most likely to require something other than plain gravity.
Mound systems
A mound system builds a raised bed of sand and gravel above the natural soil, giving wastewater the depth of suitable material it doesn't have naturally before it reaches groundwater. It's the more common engineered fix where the limiting factor is depth to bedrock or water table rather than the soil's absorption rate itself.
Aerobic treatment units
An aerobic treatment unit adds oxygen to the treatment process (mechanically, unlike a passive septic tank), producing cleaner effluent before it ever reaches the drain field - which lets a smaller or lower-quality field handle it safely. It requires more maintenance than a passive system, including periodic service contracts in most jurisdictions.

Keeping a system working once it's in

The routine upkeep is the same either way - pumping the tank every 3-5 years, not flushing anything that doesn't break down, and keeping heavy vehicles and new construction off the field.
